Potluck Rescheduling

Birdhouse Buying Club of Tampa Bay

Providing Tampa Bay citizens a democratically-managed source of local, healthy, fresh food

Market News

Please give us your feedback. Take the survey.

—>Hey Locavores!

It seems that it would be best to reschedule the potluck. Because we found out that it would be $74 to simply reserve the pavilion at Lettuce Lake and that Nate & Charlie of Gnarly Farms (backyard growers) wouldn’t be able to make it, as well as other members, it’ll be best to plan it for another time. Nate and Charlie said they’d like to host a potluck soon and then everyone could see their operation!

We apologize for the short notice and will let you know about the next one a bit more in advance. Thanks for the feedback, and can’t wait to see you all!

—>Hey Foodies!

We’re getting ready to plan our final potluck! What does everybody think about a BBQ at Lettuce Lake Park on Sunday, June 2nd? How about 3PM? Details still need to be hashed out but we have some leftover meats that the Birdhouse bought that we were thinking of grilling up. Bring a dish to share, empty stomach, and ideas for what you want to see Birdhouse become!

Everyone is welcome and the details are still TENTATIVE- so please get back to us about whether this day, time, and location work for you!

If more people can’t come than can, we may reschedule. Hope to hear from you soon!

Don’t forget to take the quick survey.

BHBC: Where We Are- Please Take the Survey and Join us for a Potluck!

Birdhouse Buying Club of Tampa Bay

Market News

Please give us your feedback. Take the survey.

—>Dear Foodies,

As some of you may have heard, and if you’ve been reading the emails, you know that Birdhouse is going on an indefinite hiatus. Below you’ll find a brief explanation of the reasoning and the next steps for Birdhouse and local food in Tampa.

First off, we want to thank you: our customers, members, chefs, community at large, and our growers. Without y’all, local food wouldn’t even be on the map in the Tampa Bay area. It’s been a true pleasure to work with you and serve you.

Due to several factors, we’ve decided to take a step back and reassess our place in the local food community. Among other things, we want to ensure that we’re providing a useful service that doesn’t draw business away from other local outlets. Though there are many successes to claim for the buying club, there is still a steep road ahead for local food. Our system in Florida, from the farm to your table, is still very young and fragile. Another challenge the buying club faces is the massive commitment of time and finances required to build a true cooperative. A cooperative needs financial and human resources to secure leases and insurance, purchase equipment, trucks, and fuel, and pay wages. Developing these resources is a long and involved process which the buying club is not yet prepared to undertake.

Although we will not be moving forward right now with plans to continue Birdhouse or develop a cooperative, we are still interested in continuing to work towards improving access to local food in the Bay Area. Please see the following sections for some of the steps we’re taking as we suspend operations:

Birdhouse Survey and Final Potluck

Many of you have donated time and resources to the buying club, and we hugely appreciate your involvement. We also greatly appreciate your dedication as purchaser and growers to the goal of developing the Tampa Bay local food ecosystem. While the buying club’s operations will be suspended, we are all still dedicated to this goal. We have developed a survey to collect your input on how well the buying club met your local food needs and what efforts may meet your needs moving forward. All responses in this survey are completely anonymous. There is the potential for better achieving our ideals and meeting the needs of the community in the future. Your feedback will help us figure out if and how that is possible for us. We invite all members, growers, and interested parties to take the survey.

In the coming month, Birdhouse will host a final potluck at which we can discuss further your interest in and goals for developing access to local food. We will provide date and location information once the potluck has been scheduled.

If you still believe in a cooperative system, please let us know and take the survey, but more importantly, come out to the potluck to figure out what everyone wants and can do from here.

Membership Reimbursement

If you purchased the $25 membership within the last year in anticipation of the buying club developing into a cooperative, we would like to offer you a full reimbursement. Please respond to this email, and we will coordinate reimbursing you for the membership.

Other Local Food Sources

In the meanwhile, we encourage you to check out these awesome spots for local and/or organic food:

Twilight Market at the Roosevelt 2.0 in Ybor (Tuesday nights from 5-10PM)

Tampa Bay Organics

Suncoast Cooperative

Duckweed

Sweetwater Farm

The Tampa Farmers Markets

and, of course, our many farms around the county.

Please also check out these local restaurants, which have bought or are currently buying local food:

Ella’s Folk Art Americana Cafe

The Refinery

The Mermaid Tavern

Cigar City Brewpub

BOCA

Trang Viet Cuisine

Cafe Hey

The Corner Store in Plant City

Reservations to Go

and there’s probably more now!

Again, thank you to all those who have helped along the way, from the Awesome Foundation, to Famous Tates, to Ella’s restaurant and of course all the members and growers for believing in this project. If you don’t want to see the Cooperative movement end, then don’t let it! Take the survey, reply to this email with any questions or comments, and join us for a potluck! We look forward to engaging with you around our shared passion for local food.

All the best!

Foodies,

The market is now open – if you’d like to order food, go ahead and place your orders online till 11pm Monday night! If you would like to order special items, i.e. not a box, please put your order in ASAP!

The operations at the BHBC are coming to a close. This well be the last week to order. There will be a follow-up e-mail with an explanation as well as a survey for members to take for some feedback on how the buying club has been doing as well as what members want to see. It has been a great run but we have to focus on other aspects of the local food movement. We appreciate your business and have loved seeing you all over the months.

We are thinking of having a potluck/documentary night for the close of our operations as a temporary farewell and thank you, so let us know what night would work for you.

As for items from certain farmers (Windmill, Morning Star, etc.), if there is not enough product ordered, it doesn’t always make financial sense for us to drive an hour or two to pick it up. We’ll try to communicate better with members when this happens but just wanted to give everybody a heads up.

My Mother’s Garden is located in south Hillsborough County on the Little Manatee River. We have been certified organic since 1992 and keep 3 greenhouses of culinary herbs, a little citrus and a small market garden. We are ecologically diverse, raising our Berkshire pigs in the woods and on pasture, grass-fed and finished beef rotationally grazed and laying hens in chicken tractors ferilizing the pastures. The livestock has not been certified organic but are raised in a natural habitat and are never given antibotics or hormones.

Sunny Spot Gardens

Brittany and Ronald Hickmans’ boring urban lot got a facelift 4 years ago when they moved into their new home on a 1/5 an acre in North Tampa. They removed grass, cleared weeds, turned dirt and started sowing the seeds of their future. Planting fruit trees, growing fruits and veggies, raising chickens and trying their hand at other farm feathered friends this little family turned their lot into a food paradise, now they share their talent with others, selling herbs, jams, and other goods. They have held numerous events engaging and teaching the community- with potlucks, guest speakers, and garden tours. Their next event will be on May 5th, International Permaculture Day!

Farm Spotlight

Rabbit Etc

We are Mike & Dee Blaha, owners of Rabbits,Etc. Our farm has been in the family for many years. Originally a 20 acre chicken farm built by Mike’s parents, Ed & Kissie Blaha in the 1940’s. The farm grew from 500 to 90,000 laying hens. Prices of eggs went down and expenses up, so the family stopped farming in 1980. We rebuilt the farm in 1992 and now farm it full time…..but this time it is to raise commercial rabbit meat and MORE, we are 21st century diversified, sustainable farmers.

We raise chemical and hormone free rabbits, chickens, eggs, sheep, cows, pigs, turkeys, Cornish hens and vegetables. Our poultry birds and foul are cage free, our cows and sheep are naturally pasture grass grazed. Our products are raised for human and pet consumption. We raise worms for bait, ornamental & tropical fish, turtles, lizards and garden composting. We also sell CWM 100, 100% composted worm manure, (worm castings). We cater to customers that want to know where their food and their pets’ food is coming from and we pride ourselves on customer service and professionalism.

Here’s whats been going on at the Co-op.

Over the past few months a ‘steering committee’ has been meeting every month & working to establish bylaws that are in accordance with our values and principles.

We are almost at the point where we can file for Cooperative status with the state of Florida statute 619. Hopefully, within a few months that will be a reality. If you would like to participate, have legal or nonprofit experience, please let us know.

_Our location change has been pushed back due to the conditions of the building that has been offered to us. Hopefully, we will be in the new space before summer hits. _

Please stay tuned for more details as they unfold.

Farm Spotlight

Gnarly Farms

We are starter homesteaders on a rental property within the Tampa City limits forging our way through sandy soils toward a tiny little eden.

The idea that organic food is best for you is not new, but we believe it based on the fact that this is how nature existed before the dawn of our own alterations to stamen and pistil. In light of this, we utilize organic fertilizers (primarily manure and compost) and focus on interplanting and biointensive methods to keep pests at a minimum rather than resorting to harmful chemicals.

Gnarly Farms is our smallest grower but also can be found at the Twilight Market in Ybor every Tuesday night, including the Birdhouse online market!

The market is now open – if you’d like to order produce, go ahead and place your orders online till 11pm Monday night!

There have recently been a few freezes and, therefore, there is a bit less product this week from Local Roots but great news, she is bringing on a lot more growers and extending into the Ocala area so in the coming weeks and months, there will be a lot more selection.

If you would like to order special items, i.e. not a box, please put your order in ASAP!

The pick up times have been extended to Wednesday 6-8pm in order to better accommodate our distributor, farmers, and customers!

And Thursday from 1-4pm. (case by case, call ahead)

If there is something special you want, please email before Sunday 4pm.

As for items from certain farmers (Windmill, Morning Star, etc.), if there is not enough product ordered, it doesn’t always make financial sense for us to drive an hour or two to pick it up. We’ll try to communicate better with members when this happens but just wanted to give everybody a heads up.

Check out some great upcoming events down below!

You now can order ANYTHINGEVEN IF the quantity says zero (some exceptions with Gnarly Farms products)

Order here today!.

Email us if you have any questions.

The boxes are now hand-selected by the customer/member instead of pre-packaged. This means the earlier you come, the more selection you’ll have for your box! Please bring your own box or reusable bag as we are running low at the coop. Also, if you have any to donate, it would be greatly appreciated.

We may donate excess food that does not sell in the course of a week to local food programs that the Tampa Underground organizes – the Good Samaritan, the Hub & home church feedings for those in need.

If you would like to be there to help drop off for those folks, please let me know.

Our location has to change around the end of February/beginning of March.

Right now it looks like we will be moving into the blue building near the current location as another temporary spot. We’re still planning to move around the end of this month and could use some help so let us know if you’d be willing to volunteer your time and/or supplies.

We have also been visiting an aquaponics farm in Dade City called Morning Star Fishermen. They have a 65,000 gallon aquaponics system and are raising tilapia as well as a ton of vegetables. It is a truly inspiring production- they even teach classes and are expanding. We’re thinking of planning a field trip up there with members so be on the lookout for info! We want members to be involved and get to know their farmer(s), so check out the growers on the website, let us know if you are interested in visiting any of them, and we can try to set something up. After all, that’s the point!

Be on the lookout for Recipes under the appropriate tab on Locally Grown!

More updates to come soon!
